On February 28, 1997 Bowdoin's Board of Trustees approved a plan to phase out fraternities on campus, [23] replacing them with a system of college-owned social houses. [ 24 ] In 1970, Bowdoin began competing in the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Consortium , with Bates and Colby.
Bowdoin is one of few schools in the country that has banned Greek life. Never seeing himself in the fraternity scene, Short said he would not have joined a fraternity at any school. He welcomed the absence of Greek life, an institution he felt could divide the community and make some students feel left out at a small school.
A local fraternity, Alpha Rho Upsilon (whose letters were chosen to stand for “All Races United”), was founded in 1936 in response to this exclusion. While over 95% of the Bowdoin student body was composed of fraternity brothers in the late sixties, by 1971, only 50% of freshmen joined a fraternity.
In 1983, Bowdoin’s only sorority, Alpha Beta Phi, was founded. The fraternities were an integral (albeit occasionally problematic) part of Bowdoin’s social scene, but the Board of Trustees’ 1997 decision to phase them out was, in part, because of their incompatibility with coeducation.
