Guitar World also ranked Cantrell's solo in "Man in the Box" at No. 77 on its list of "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" in 2008. [17] Cantrell has earned nine Grammy Award nominations as a member of Alice in Chains.
Kinney met up with Alice in Chains in 1987, [2] when guitarist Jerry Cantrell wanted to form a new band after his band Diamond Lie broke up, so his roommate Layne Staley gave him the phone number of Kinney's girlfriend, Melinda Starr, so that Cantrell could talk to Kinney and set up a meeting. [2]
Alice in Chains has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, including over 14 million in the United States. The band has 18 singles in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks list, 5 No. 1 hits, and 11 Grammy Award nominations.
