12 Years a Slave is a 2013 biographical drama film directed by Steve McQueen from a screenplay by John Ridley, based on the 1853 slave memoir Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, an African American man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C. by two conmen in 1841 and sold into slavery.
Remarkably, unlike in Solomon Northup’s narrative, all of the enslaved women who have substantial roles in McQueen’s film adaptation are concubines. Along with Eliza, there is Epps’s slave Patsey, and Harriet Shaw, the slave “mistress” of a neighboring plantation.
Solomon Northup also detailed the experiences of the slave women he encountered during his twelve years as a slave, and especially elaborated on the experience of Patsey, a twenty-three-year-old slave who was the victim of a licentious master and a jealous mistress.
