Between 4.5 to 6
- Ericaceous plants thrive in cool, moist climates with well-drained, acidic soil. The ideal pH range for these plants is between 4.5 to 6, which is slightly more acidic than neutral soil (pH of 7). These plants prefer partial shade, but there are some varieties that can tolerate full sun.

Most ericas prefer a pH of 5.5 to 6.5, although some, such as darleyensis will tolerate a higher pH. If you find that your soil is too alkaline for ericas, you can still grow them in containers, using ericaceous (acidic) compost. Ericas also like free-draining soil, and once settled in are fairly tolerant of drought.

Most ericas are heathland plants that like free-draining, acidic soil. However, there are a few that will tolerate moist, neutral to alkaline soils, such as Erica × darleyensis, E. carnea, E. vagans and E. erigena.
Most need acidic soil, preferably free-draining and sandy, in full sun. Winter-flowering cultivars will tolerate neutral or alkaline soils. For growing in containers, use ericaceous (acidic) compost with added lime-free grit to improve drainage.

Planting and Growing Erica. Plant in a sunny position in well-drained acidic soil. Most heathers prefer acid soils but several varieties, including E. carnea, E. darleyensis, E. medditerranea and E. terminalis, will tolerate alkaline conditions.
Oct 17, 2024 · Choose a spot with acidic soil that can drain freely. Soil that retains moisture, or is neutral or alkali, will stifle or even kill off further tree heather growth. This plant likes full sun or partial shade, and will do well growing under the canopy of a bigger tree.
To ensure good drainage in heavier soil, grow them in a rockery or place a layer of builder’s rubble half a metre under the soil. They also require acidic soil with a pH ranging from 4 to 5.5. The soil mix should be half good soil and half old compost.
