  1. Oct 18, 2024 · Between paradise and hell (the two districts of Hades) there was “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26). The fact that no one could cross this chasm indicates that, after death, one’s fate is sealed. Today, when an unbeliever dies, he follows the Old Testament unbelievers to the torment side of Hades.

  2. A: Heaven was meant for people of faith in Old Testament times just as much as it is for us. It’s true that God didn’t reveal as much about heaven to them as He has to us, but they still understood that heaven was their final home — just as it is ours.

  3. When Old Testament believers died, their spirits went immediately into the presence of God. For example, in Psalm 16:11, the psalmist was anticipating leaving this world and going into the presence of God to find pleasure and fullness of joy forever.

  4. Some people feel the Old Testament saints went to a place specially created by God. Until Christ sacrificed Himself on the cross, heaven was not open to them. Their sins were atoned for, or covered up, but they were not taken away.

You may read through these and notice a few songs missing: the Magnificat, Hannah’s prayer, etc. I left them out because I wanted to list the pieces that are explicitly called songs (or kinds of songs). It may very well be that Samson sang his poem about the donkey’s jawbone in Judges 15:16… … but he also may have just put together a witty little p...

The song of Moses and Miriam

(Exodus 15:1–18, 21) The first song in the Bible happens after one of its greatest miracles. God parts the Red Sea, allowing the children of Israel to cross on dry ground, escaping Pharaoh’s army. When the Egyptians pursue them, God shuts the sea over them, washing away chariots and horsemen. Then Moses leads the men in a song of praise to God, while Miriam leads the women in the chorus:

The song of wells in the wilderness

(Nu 21:17–18) As Israel wanders through the wilderness in the book of Numbers, they come to a place called Beer. “Beer” is Hebrew for “well,” and (surprise, surprise) there’s a big well there where the whole nation refills its water supply. It’s a pretty happy occasion, and the Israelites break into song:

    Song of Moses and Joshua

(Deuteronomy 31:19–22, 30, 32:1–43) Int he book of Deuteronomy, Moses recommissions the nation of Israel to love and obey the Lord when they enter the promised land. He lays down the law, appoints Joshua as the new leader, and makes the people swear their allegiance to their God. Then Moses sums it all up in a song, which he and Joshua teach to the people. It’s a covenant song of God’s faithfulness: He is the righteous Rock of Israel. The song reminds Israel of the the Lord’s blessings, and w...

In addition to all these, the Bible alludes to more songs without including the lyrics: 1. Solomon wrote 1,005 songs (1 Ki 4:32). The Bible doesn’t record them all, but we have a good idea which one Solomon thought was best: the Song of all Songs(Sol 1:1). 2. When king Hezekiah repairs the temple, the trumpeters kick off a song to the Lord (2 Ch 29...

  5. Jul 13, 2023 · How people were saved during the time of the Old Testament is a confusing question to some. We know that, in the New Testament era, salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12; Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus is the Way (John 14:6). But, before Christ, what was the way?

  7. The first thing Scripture teaches us about Old Testament believers is that they expected heaven. As we saw in our first article from Ecclesiastes 3, there is a sense of eternity placed in the hearts of all humanity by God. The Old Testament saints expected life beyond the grave.
