Part of the Jefferson County School System, it was established in Fall 1949 on Hermosa Drive near Homewood as a replacement for Shades Cahaba High School. It was moved to its present location on Old Leeds Road in Irondale in the fall of 1996.

    Shades Valley High School's Alma Mater,is sung to the tune of Joseph Haydn's refrain from his String Quarter in C major, Opus 76,3, which is also used as the national anthem of Germany.

    The Mounties' fight song is derivative of "I'm a Tar Hell Born" written in 1897by William Starr Myers for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.
