   • Many readers therefore interpreted Banville’s decision to append his own name to last year’s best-selling Snow — starring a new detective, St John Strafford, but set in 1950s Ireland and featuring many of the same characters as the Quirke series — as a statement that his crime writing should now be considered part of his literary oeuvre.

   Why did John Banville turn to crime?

   • John Banville turned to crime some years ago employing the pseudonym Benjamin Black. It was difficult to see why. The novels were recognizably his, elegant and acute. A couple of years ago Black was apparently retired, and an excellent Crime novel, Snow, appeared under Banville’s own name.
