The series was made by Zenith Productions for Central Independent Television, and first shown in the UK on the ITV network of regional broadcasters. Between 1995 and 1996 the commissioning company was Carlton Television, and towards the end of the series it was a joint venture by Carlton and WGBH.

In August 2011, ITV announced plans to film a prequel drama called Endeavour, with author Colin Dexter's participation. English actor Shaun Evans was cast as a young Morse in his early career. [15][16] The pilot episode was broadcast on 2 January 2012 on ITV. The prequel was made by Mammoth Screen.
The show is based around the exciting exploits of Chief Inspector Morse (John Thaw), a senior officer within the Criminal Investigation Department of the Oxford Police, as he investigates heavy crimes in and around Oxford with his sidekick, Detective Sergeant Robert Lewis (Kevin Whately).

Inspector Morse is a British television crime drama, starring John Thaw and Kevin Whately, for which eight series were broadcast between 1987 and 2000, totalling thirty-three episodes. Although the last five episodes were each broadcast a year apart (two years before the final episode), when released on DVD, they were billed as Series Eight.

Inspector Morse is a series of crime novels written by Colin Dexter. The series followed the cases investigated by Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse and his partner Detective Sergeant Robert Lewis. In 1987, a 33 episode television series based on the novels was released which ran until 2000, with John Thaw playing the leading role of Morse and Kevin Whately as Lewis.
