Horner gave up directing in 1959 and turned full-time to art direction. From that point on, he produced wonderfully detailed and nuanced designs in a variety of genres. For The Hustler (1961) he created a dark world of seedy pool hustlers and small-time criminals; and he won his second Oscar®.
