My problems with the Brian's death arc are mainly with Christmas Guy. In theory, killing Brian off could have worked, even if it'd be emotionally devastating for his fans. And on its own I do think Life of Brian is a pretty solid episode.

Brian seems pretty close to his parents (and his nephews.) He still lived with them as a young adult. He returned to them instead of driving off in the van in attempt to flee. He probably (rightfully) assumed they would help him. I think the parents know that he killed Gabby. He may have said it was accidental.
