Symphony: Mathis der Maler (Matthias the Painter) is among the most famous orchestral works of German composer Paul Hindemith. Music from the symphony was incorporated into, or reworked for, Hindemith's opera Mathis der Maler, which concerns the painter Matthias Grünewald (or Neithardt).
Although Hindemith remains arguably the most deeply unfashionable and grievously underrated of all 20th-century masters, his Mathis der Maler Symphony has maintained its place in the repertoire and boasts a sizeable stream of fine recordings.
Mathis witnesses the struggles between the Papists and Lutheran which, in turn, involve the struggle between the peasants and the wealthy. Caught between various loyalties, Mathis feels the strife to find refuge in another city, Kˆngishofen and is disaffected by the cruelty of the peasantsí army.
