May 25, 2022 · The opera, Mathis der Maler (“Mathias the Painter”), is a fictional account of the life of the German Renaissance painter, Mathias Grunewald (c. 1475-1528). It is set during Central Europe’s Peasants’ War of 1524, a brief, but tumultuous, rebellion which was inspired by the ideals of the Protestant Reformation.
Drawing on the tradition of operas on historic topics, the composer used the opportunity to recount the story of the sixteenth-century century painter Matthias Gr¸newald, best known today for his altarpieces at Isenheim, whose was caught up in the Peasantsí War to serve as a commentary on the contemporary situation in Nazi Germany.
The famed German painter Albert Oehlen welcomes us to his studio to share his creative process. We see him struggling with the white canvas, muttering about balance, philosophizing about color, and weeping when the canvas “isn’t speaking to him.”
