In this chapter, we’ll first consider how macromolecules are built. Then we’ll examine the structure and function of all four classes of large biological molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
The building blocks are used to form typical biopolymers such as proteins (amino acids), polysac-charides (monosaccharides), DNA/RNA (mononucleotides), and lipids (molecular aggregates) (Ta-ble 1.3). The function of these biopolymers tends to be the same in all living organisms.
