Patient safety is the avoidance of unintended or unexpected harm to people during the provision of health care. We support providers to minimise patient safety incidents and drive improvements in safety and quality. Patients should be treated in a safe environment and protected from avoidable harm.
This framework was announced as a priority in the NHS Patient Safety Strategy published in 2019.6 It provides guidance on how the NHS can involve people in their own safety as well as improving patient safety in partnership with staff: maximising the things that go right and minimising the things that go wrong for people receiving healthcare.
