Apr 12, 2018 · Amnesty International recorded at least 2,591 death sentences in 53 countries in 2017, a significant decrease from the record-high of 3,117 recorded in 2016. At least 21,919 people were known to be on death row at the end of 2017.
Dec 14, 2017 · Executions and new death sentences were near historic lows in 2017, and public support for the death penalty polled at its lowest level in 45 years. Both the 23 executions and the projected 39 new death sentences in 2017 were the second lowest totals in more than a quarter-century.
HIGHLIGHTS. At year-end 2017, a total of 32 states and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) held 2,703 prisoners under sentence of death, which was 94 (3%) less than at year-end 2016. In 2017, the number of prisoners held under sentence of death declined for the 17th consecutive year. 11 states held the same number.

Amnesty International confirmed that 619 death sentences were imposed in the region in 2017, a reduction on the 764 death sentences recorded in 2016. The majority of confirmed death sentences were imposed in Egypt, with 402 people sentenced to death compared to at least 237 in 2016.
At the close of 2017, a total of 142 countries had ended the death penalty in law or practice, with 106 countries completely removing it from their law books. Globally, executions were down by four per cent from 2016 and by 39 per cent from 2015.
