We propose eight hallmarks of environmental insults (Figure 1) which describe the cellular and molecular processes involved in essential cellular mechanisms and activities that are capable of linking environmental exposures to chronic diseases such as cancer, respiratory, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and diseases of the nervous system.
