    This guidance sets out the different categories of the UK’s public bodies in a public bodies handbook.

    This guidance:

    •provides a high-level introduction to the early decision-making process for establishing public bodies

    •summarises the main characteristics of different types of public bodies

    •provides information on the some of the legacy forms of public bodies that still exist

    The guidance reflects the changes to the classification framework recommended in the report on the outcome of the classification review.

    It forms part one of the comprehensive handbook on public bodies recommended in the report and replaces Categories of Public Bodies: A Guide for Departments published in December 2012.
