    Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people's behaviour, including restlessness and impulsiveness. Symptoms usually improve with age but many adults continue to experience problems.

    Most cases are diagnosed when children are 3 to 7 years old, sometimes later in childhood or as an adult. Discuss concerns with GP if you think your child may have the condition or if you're an adult who thinks they may have undiagnosed ADHD.

    The exact cause is unknown but it runs in families and there are differences in the brains of people with the condition compared to those without it. Other factors include premature birth, low birthweight, smoking/alcohol/drug abuse during pregnancy and more common in people with learning difficulties.

    For children, appropriate educational support alongside medicine can help manage their symptoms; for adults medicine is often first treatment offered along with psychological therapies such as CBT which may also help.
