Lightning is a large-scale natural spark discharge that occurs within the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and the Earth’s surface. On discharge, a highly electrically conductive plasma channel is created within the air, and when current flows within this channel, it rapidly heats the air up to about 25,000°C.
As the downburst reaches the ground, the air rapidly spreads out causing extreme winds at ground level that can be comparable to a weak tornado (Figure 4). While a thunderstorm, by definition, produces wind gusts of at least 90 kilometres per hour, peak winds can exceed 160 kilometres per hour.
