  1. The analysis showed that broken rails or welds were the leading derailment cause on main, yard, and siding tracks. By contrast to accident causes on main tracks, bearing failures and broken wheels were not among the top accident causes on yard or siding tracks.

It is not too much to say that the history of railway safety in Japan is the history of accidents. We have improved the safety level because we must not repeat the accident that occurred in the past. In this chapter, we explain two accidents that were a turning point for our countermeasures.

Image 2: The mechanism of ATS-P The mechanism of ATS-P systems are that an ATS wayside coil transmits the distance to the red signal for trains. Next, the on-board ATS-P device for trains calculates the continuous brake pattern based on the distance to the red signal. If the train speed exceeds the continuous brake pattern, service brake works auto...

In this chapter, we explain the Fukuchiyama-Line derailment that occurred on West Japan Railway Company.

  3. There were 17 passenger fatalities in 2018-19, up from 9 in 2017-18. This is the highest number for the last ten years. 13 fatalities occurred on the mainline and 4 on London Underground....

  4. Dec 9, 2020 · PDF / ePub. More. Abstract. Train collision-induced derailment may result in serious casualties. This study investigates the railway vehicle derailment behaviour and explores the derailment causes in train-to-train impacts. A train-track coupled dynamic model is developed and validated.

  5. Train accident rates are composed of derailments, collisions, highway-rail grade crossing accidents, and other accident types. The likelihood that a train will be involved in an accident is a function of both car-miles and train-miles operated (7, 9, 10).
