White received his for his flight to 314,750 feet, or 59.6 miles, on July 17, 1962, in the X-15 rocket-powered research plane. White’s wings were presented to him by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Curtis E. LeMay in a Pentagon ceremony on July 19 of last year.
Of all the early operators of military aircraft, Germany was unusual in not using circular roundels. After evaluating several possible markings, including a black, red, and white checkerboard, a similarly coloured roundel, and black stripes, it chose a black 'iron cross' on a square white field, as it was already in use on various flags, and reflected Germany's heritage as the Holy Roman Empire.
The chosen design was the French national cockade, whose colours are the blue-white-red of the flag of France. Similar national cockades, with different ordering of colours, were designed and adopted as aircraft roundels by their allies, including the British Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service , and (in the last few months of the war) the United States Army Air Service .

When both United States flag and the Royal Air Force ensign are flown at military installations, both will be raised and lowered simultaneously.
