Warning: full spoilers for Season 2 follow.

When Defiance returned this summer for its second season, it did so long after the hype wave of the MMORPG game had crested. It became all the more important for the TV series to stand on its own two legs and prove that it could continue to thrive independent of its source material. And the Season 1 finale certainly gave the writers plenty of material to work with. The finale culminated with Irisa giving herself over to a mysterious Votan goddess in order to save her adoptive father, Nolan. Meanwhile, the town of Defiance found itself being invaded and taken over by the militaristic Earth Republic. The stage was set for a darker and more dramatic second season. And while this season definitely had its moments, it never seemed to take advantage of that promising setup.

From the Season 2 premiere, "The Opposite of Hallelujah," the show seemed to suffer from a lack of energy and momentum. The premiere was fairly laid back considering how long the show had been away. And the end result of Nolan's hunt for the missing Irisa was nothing more exciting than the full cast being reunited in Defiance. And it quickly became apparent that life in the city hadn't changed nearly as much as fans might have expected. Certainly, most of the main cast members had their lives changed in some form or another. Tommy had become sheriff in Nolan's absence. Datak Tarr and Doc Yewll were rotting in prison, leaving the rest of the Tarr clan to continue the family business in Datak's absence. Rafe McCawley was stuck working as a lowly peon in the mines he used to own. And the formerly clean-cut Amanda Rosewater had traded the life of a mayor for one of running a brothel.

On a small scale, things had changed. But in terms of the larger dynamic of the city, it was a surprisingly "business as usual" affair. The show introduced two new recurring E-Rep players in the form acting mayor Niles Pottinger (James Murray) and the idealistic Jessica "Berlin" Rainier (Anna Hopkins). Both characters fit into the general show dynamic well enough, but neither rocked the boat as much as they could have. This season was perpetually reluctant to explore the tension between the ordinary citizens of Defiance and the E-Rep occupiers. And it seems like such a wasted opportunity given how much the core appeal of Defiance is built on racial tension and the idea of humans and aliens struggling to co-exist in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Where were the clashes between angry resistance cells and the trigger-happy soldiers? In this case, the revolution was not televised, because it never happened.

In some ways, Defiance's second season managed to improve on the formula of the first. The ensemble cast was put to better use this year. Some old favorites continued to entertain, while other characters emerged from their shells to become big players. But the overarching conflict was uneven at best, as the show frequently ignored the tension cause...

  2. Feb 22, 2024 · The result was a quality show that didn’t need the game tie-in gimmick to deliver a great story. Defiance opens with a human scavenger and his alien adopted daughter singing along with Johnny Cash’s “Jackson.”. This odd pairing is Joshua Nolan (True Blood’s Grant Bowler) and Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas (Mirrormask)).

  3. Watchlist. It's the middle of the 21st century and there are new rules and a completely altered landscape on Earth after three decades of alien races arriving on the planet. Mysterious Nolan and ...
