  1. This is a list of United States Death Metal (USDM) bands that were originally formed in the United States. Death metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. It typically employs heavily distorted guitars, tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, minor keys or atonality, and complex song structures with multiple tempo changes.

    • Gatecreeper. It's no surprise to anyone that Gatecreeper have taken the world by storm. The Arizona death metal powerhouse have it all – incredible riffs, believable ferocity, fifty-story production, a killer name, and a live show that will make any attendee move.
    • Spectral Voice. It doesn’t necessarily make Spectral Voice’s music better that they only perform with all the lights turned off. But it does speak to the artistic dedication one can hear in the tunes of this Denver outfit.
    • Temple Of Void. Detroit’s Temple Of Void have been hyped up heavily in the underground since the release of 2014’s Of Terror And the Supernatural, and every word of that praise is deserved.
    • Venom Prison. Rarely does a death metal band match their message with momentum quite like Venom Prison do. The South Wales five-piece take an approach to their art and lyrics that might make your typical conservative death metaller uncomfortable, but they back it up with so much vehemence and power – dear God, that fucking guitar tone!

You’re here to check out death metal bands, after all? Well, I’m in one – and one of the purposes of this epic-size content is to make you listen to it. This is Desolator, old school death metal for fans of Immolation, Morbid Angel, Bloodbath and more. If you dig the song, please stream/download our music from Bandcamp and follow us on Facebook.

Let’s begin the top 50 with a hidden gem – Sweden’s The Curse. Sadly, the reincarnation of Kaamos has only released one EP, but it’s a damn good slab of old school Swedish death metal.

Poland is filled with quality death metal, and Lost Soul is certainly one of the best. Personally, I’m not that crazy about the super-ambitious newer material. However, 2005’s “Chaostream” kicks ass.

Cryptopsy’s first two albums are righteously counted as classics in both brutal and technical death metal. The band may sound a bit silly at times, but the music is insanely intense, abrupt and chaotic.

Amoral plays a catchy take on progressive death metal. Or well, played, before the band switched vocalist and released the terrible album “Show Your Colours”. Shitty power metal aside, that doesn’t make 2005’s “Decrowning” any less awesome.

The first two Grave albums “Into the Grave” and “You’ll Never See” are mandatory pieces of Swedish death metal. Both are raw high-quality examples of the style well-worth checking out, even if they don’t reach the heights of Dismember and Entombed.

Most people would rank Asphyx (#57) over this one, among their Martin van Drunen-fronted projects. I have to say I prefer Hail of Bullets, though – especially the first album “…Of Frost and War” (2008). The songs are both catchy and epic. Not to mention the guitar tone, which is insanely heavy.

There’s no denying the longevity of this band. Peak Malevolent for me is probably 1995’s “Eternal”, but the band has managed to release 13 full-length albums at this point, and most are good.

A new-era slam band among all the classic death metal bands?! Well, indeed. Degrade’s “Lost Torso Found” happens to kick unbelievable amounts of ass. So much that it even captures spot 43 on this list.

    • Death. Orlando, Florida metallers Death are considered the pioneers of the death metal genre, with their 1987 debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, regarded as the scene’s spearhead.
    • Cannibal Corpse. Cannibal Corpse’s imagery is as iconic as it is horrifying. From their 1990 debut album, Eaten Back To Life, through to Butchered At Birth, Tomb Of The Mutilated and 2017’s Red Before Black, they have racked up two million sales, making them death metal’s biggest-selling band of all time.
    • Obituary. Florida was a hotbed for death metal in the 80s, and if Death were frontrunners of the scene, Tampa’s Obituary took it to a wider audience.
    • Morbid Angel. Formed in 1983, Morbid Angel’s first four albums – Altars Of Madness (1989), Blessed Are The Sick (1991), Covenant (1993) and Domination (1995) – are consistently held up as death metal classics.
    • Possessed – Seven Churches (1985) It’s easy to forget that Primus’ Larry Lalonde played with death metal pioneers Possessed, as atmosphere and groove are not what fueled the Bay Area Band.
    • Death – Leprosy (1988) It is impossible to overstate Death’s importance. In truth, any one of their records could have a place on this list, given that every one of their studio records had genre-shaping consequences.
    • Morbid Angel – Altars of Madness (1989) Death metal as it exists now would not be what it is without Altars of Madness. The debut album from Florida’s Morbid Angel has been heralded as one of the most pivotal records in death metal’s origin story.
    • Obituary – Slowly We Rot (1989) The debut album by Florida death metal icons Obituary was the band’s only release to be played in standard tuning, which had the effect of giving the guitars more of a thrash metal sound.
