The movie describes the troubles in a small bakery in Bavaria that gets in trouble when a neighboring supermarket tries to force the bakery out of the market. The bakery bakes good bread without any chemistry.
A supermarket has opened near his bakery and is ruining his business with cheap, industrially produced bread rolls. Not even running amok in the supermarket can hinder its success. It could be a story from today, but the film was made in the 1970s.
Werner Wild becomes an apprentice to Baum, a small-town baker who maintains old-fashioned production methods to preserve quality. But the workings of competitive society and the pressures on the individual, i.e. the baker's syndicate versus Baum's traditionalist methods, proves too much for the latter, and he must conform.
