Very interesting and unique film. While definitely within the horror genre, it's more of a minimalist grim drama with little dialogue. Despite a deliberately glacial pace, this somber film was mostly engaging and watchable, but it definitely could have done with a bit more momentum during the second half. SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT.
The Dark (2018) is an incredible indie Horror film with heart and a sadly generic title. Holy crap this movie hit me like a ton of bricks. This is an amazing riff on the Slasher sub-genre. Mina is basically a wraith, the victim of terrible crimes who stalks the woods, killing anyone who triggers her wrath. She knows she can't help herself.
There's a lot packed into Justin P Lange's downbeat horror fable. It's been described as a zombie film, but that seems to miss the point. Mina's violence is essentially defensive, or born out of understandable anger (with exploitative would-be heroes as well as monsters of a different sort). Her dehumanisation is as much metaphorical as physical.
