"Our goal was to create sequels and prequels to the films we loved, paying careful attention to quality and detail, essentially treating those films as though they were our own. Star Wars has been the crown jewel of this approach."

―Mike Richardson, on the end of Dark Horse's initial Star Wars publishing run

Dark Horse began publishing comics in 1986 and first published for Star Wars with Star Wars: Dark Empire in 1991. The company also republished the Marvel Star Wars comics and produced several compilations of works, including the aforementioned Marvel works, in a collection of trade paperbacks known as Star Wars Omnibus. The Omnibus imprint was also used for other fictional universes, such as Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Dark Horse has a division called Dark Horse Digital, which allows customers to view comics online.

On January 3, 2014, Disney announced that the Star Wars comics license would move from Dark Horse back to Marvel in 2015. After a six-year-long hiatus, it was announced on November 18, 2021, that Dark Horse would return to publishing Star Wars comics alongside Marvel in 2022. Multiple series are planned for the new program, with initial titles being part of the Star Wars: The High Republic publishing initiative published in the spring of 2022. This re-launch of the Dark Horse Star Wars brand will also include one-shots, graphic novels, anthologies, and more.

    • Knights of the Old Republic Expands Upon the Classic Games' Lore. January 2006. John Jackson Miller, Brian Ching, Dan Parsons, et al.
    • Tales of the Jedi Chronicles the Ancient Quarrels of Jedi and Sith. October 1993. Tom Veitch, Kevin Anderson, Chriss Gossett, Mike Barreiro, et al.
    • Dawn of the Jedi is a Star Wars Origin Story. February 2012. John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, Wes Dzioba. Lucasfilm's dependence on the Skywalker Saga can be admittedly frustrating, but director James Mangold might be taking a brave leap backward in time with a story loosely based on Dawn of the Jedi.
    • Legacy is an Ambitious Distant Sequel to the Original Trilogy. June 2006. John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, Brad Anderson, et al.
    • Hellboy. Created by Mike Mignola and technically first appearing on the cover of Dime Press #4. While Hellboy technically debuted in San Diego Comic Con Comics #2, his first appearance in a widely available book published by Dark Horse came in Next Men #21.
    • The Mask. Created by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke and first appearing in Dark Horse Presents #10 (1987) The Mask in question isn’t a character in the traditional sense, as the titular protagonist is an inanimate object.
    • The Heroes of Sin City. Appearing in Frank Miller’s Sin City (1991) Frank Miller’s Sin City is a gritty successor to the noirs and crime comics that built the industry.
    • The Heroes of Black Hammer. Jeff Lemire created these icons in Black Hammer #1 (2016) Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer introduces characters who are more essence than parody of fan-favorite heroes from the Big Two.
    • Dark Empire (1991) Writer: Tom Veitch. Artist: Cam Kennedy. The first Star Wars story produced by Dark Horse remains one of their most famous. Luke Skywalker’s inevitable fall to the dark side, the return of Boba Fett, and the Emperor’s reincarnation through cloning were the ingredients used to create one of the most successful arcs in the franchise’s history.
    • The Golden Age of the Sith (1996) Writer: Kevin J. Anderson. Artist: Dario Carrasco, Jr. In 1993, Dark Horse’s classic Tales of the Jedi introduced us to the most perilous era in the galaxy far, far away.
    • Knights of the Old Republic (2005) Writer: John Jackson Miller. Artists: Brian Ching, Travel Foreman, Dustin Weaver, Harvey Tolibao, Bong Dazo, Scott Hepburn, Alan Robinson, Dean Zachary, Ron Chan.
    • Purge (2005) Writer: John Ostrander. Artist: Douglas Wheatley. You don’t really need to read this comic to know what happened to the Jedi post-Revenge of the Sith…but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun to watch Darth Vader vanquish his enemies.
