(b. August 29, 1966 or December 20, 1968), better known by the stage name Dan the Automator, is an American hip hop producer. He founded the record label 75 Ark, which was distributed by Tommy Boy Records during its short existence (1996-2001).
Dan was the principal producer for the first Gorillaz album, Gorillaz, alongside songs present on G-Sides. Dan also created the mix compilation "Wanna Buy A Monkey?", which includes the original version of Gorillaz' "Latin Simone".
Dan started off his career producing for Kool Keith under his alter-ego Dr. Octagon.
Dan is a founding member of the hip hop group Deltron 3030, along with other phase one collaborators Kid Koala and Del The Funky Homosapien. Damon Albarn collaborated with the group on the track "Time Keeps On Slipping" on their 2000 self-titled album and was featured in the song "What Is This Loneliness" from their second studio album "Event 2".
Dan the Automator is also a founding member of hip-hop group Handsome Boy Modelling School, alongside Prince Paul. Del, Kid Koala, and Miho Hatori have also featured on their work - they've released two studio albums and most recently, one EP in 2023.
Dan has also done soundtrack work, solo work, and countless remixes.

Dan the Automator was a really crucial gateway artist in my early music nerd years back in the early 2000s. He was at the intersection of a bunch of my different musical interests at the time - Gorillaz, Mike Patton, Kid Koala, Del the Funky Homosapien - and inspiring as an Asian-American making a big impact on pop culture at a time when representation was still pretty thin.
Dan “The Automator” Nakamura has never waited for approval or applause. For over two decades, he has created progressive, genre-warping music on his terms. Whether collaborating with like-minded artists such as Del the Funky Homosapien and Damon Albarn or scoring films (e.g., 2019’s Booksmart), he has disregarded accepted convention and fleeting trends.
