Oral cancer or mouth cancer is a type of head and neck cancer. There are over 12,400 new casesin the UK each year. Anyone can get it, but it affects men more than women. Mouth cancer can develop in the lips, gums, tongue surface, and the tissue inside the mouth. Other common locations include the roof (palate) and the floor of the mouth.
The early stages can have no distinct symptoms. It is easy for mouth cancer symptoms to appear as something less serious, such as an abscess. As the condition progresses, your symptoms may become more noticeable. Symptoms include 1. Speech changes, such as developing a lisp 2. Numbness on the lips or tongue 3. Regular check-ups with your dentist can help us identify mouth cancer sooner. Book an appointment with your GP or dentist if you experience concerning symptoms or have a persistent sore or ulcer. Your doctor may look at common causes of your symptoms before referring you to a specialist for further testing.
