Apr 4, 2017 · Cold engine starts 1st time on 3/4 choke and once warm the choke can be reduced to zero and all seems ok for about 15 mins of mowing. After approx 15 mins of use on full throttle the engine starts to "hunt" with the revs cycling between tickover and full chat every few seconds with the governor arm swinging back n forth like a slow metronome.
Feb 23, 2011 · Next, set the throttle stop screw on the top of the carb so the engine is running as evenly as it can on a high tickover. Then, gently turn the idle mixture screw slowly in each direction. Turning it anticlockwise should allow excess fuel in - the engine may chuff black smoke and start to slow.

The reason it does that when getting low on fuel is because it is now sucking in air from the tank as well as what fuel remains, fuel level in the bowl drops and the mixture becomes lean. Hunting is generally a result of a too lean mixture.
What is Engine 'Hunting'?: This is when the engine revs up and drops back down rapidly on a cycle. It is usually caused by a lean fuel mixture - ie.) not enough fuel in the fuel-air ratio. This is controlled by your carburettor and governor. What can I do?
Jul 14, 2017 · If the engines ok in neutral you could have a converter problem. If the stator sprag fails it will tighten up the stall speed and cause the tickover to labour against it. Does it feel like it's trying to pull the car along on tickover?
