Fletcher purposely set the situation up to embarrass Andrew and humiliate him so he will never drum again. Once humiliated, Andrew (Teller) fights back and does Caravan.    In the end Whiplash isn't a movie about Jazz. The musical aspect is merely a crutch to tell a story about whether or how much sacrifice is acceptable to reach greatness in any particular field. It could just as well have been about a student focusing on football or mathematics to tell that story.
