The term adherence captures the increasing complexity of medical care by characterizing the extent to which patients follow set goals for their medical treatment. Despite the fact that both adherence and compliance have implicit meaning of power imbalance and medical paternalism, most of the researchers prefer “adherence” in contrast to “compliance.”
