Ciske de Rat ("Ciske the Rat") is the story of eleven-year-old lonely street child Ciske (Franciscus) Vrijmoeth, who has no friends and is only called "the Rat". Ciske has to change school, because he poured ink over his teacher's head.
Ciske de Rat is a 1984 Dutch drama film directed by Guido Pieters, based on the novel of the same name by Piet Bakker. Ciske is played by 13-year-old Danny de Munk who also sang the title song Ik voel me zo verdomd alleen ("I feel so damned alone") which scored a number one hit in the Netherlands.
His mother works in a bar and Ciske helps out often late into the night - his father is at sea and his mother supplements her income with prostitution. Ciske is also a very angry young man and he smoulders with rage at life's injustices.
Ciske, an 11 year old schoolboy growing up in 1930’s Amsterdam is a scamp with a heart of gold, but causes havoc in the classroom pouring ink over his teacher. Yet, when a polio-crippled boy joins the class Ciske is one of the only children to befriend him and is bullied as a result.
