Hello, I haven't been doing the NYT Mini very long (I'm in the UK ad one of my friends recently sent it to me, and now it has become a hugely competitive contest between us). In today's NYT Mini there are two circled squares.

I just started playing the mini puzzle but this got me confused. The main crossword puzzles have a theme to some of the clues. The circled letters can be rearranged to spell out that theme. Minis don’t generally have a theme. But this one did.
Today's NYT Mini has some squares with circles and also a "rebus" button. I solved the puzzle without using these, but can someone explain what they mean and how to use them?
