The assumption that having children is a right and proper – and indeed ‘natural — thing to do is rarely questioned.
In the concluding chapter she argues that the best reason for having a child is to have a parent-child relationship—to love the child because of who it is. Such a relationship, she claims, "gives a particular meaning to one's own life and to the life of the being that is created" (p. 217).
