Tafari Makonnen I was born on 23 July 1892 to Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael Guddisa (who was a first cousin to Menelik II, the reigning monarch, and who had been appointed governor of the Ethiopian province of Harar in 1887) and Yeshimebet Ali. In 1916, Tafari became regent of Ethiopia and was accorded the title Ras (head, duke, or prince).
