Tafari Makonnen I was born on 23 July 1892 to Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael Guddisa (who was a first cousin to Menelik II, the reigning monarch, and who had been appointed governor of the Ethiopian province of Harar in 1887) and Yeshimebet Ali.
