Charles Henry Baker Jr. (December 25, 1895 – November 11, 1987) was an American author best known for his culinary and cocktail writings. These books have become highly collectible among cocktail aficionados and culinary historians.
Charles H. Baker, Jr., wrote five collections of recipes that are far more than cookbooks, and impossible to classify. In the introduction to the two-volume Gentleman’s Companion (1939), Baker states his chief tenet.
While they boldly set out in search of riverheads, lost cities and fresh sources of malaria, Baker crisscrossed the globe tracking down legendary cocktails to their sources, bringing to light new tipples, and contracting, again and again, what he liked to call “lethal morning-after disease.”
