Cecily Neville (3 May 1415 – 31 May 1495) was an English noblewoman, the wife of Richard, Duke of York (1411–1460), and the mother of two kings of England—Edward IV and Richard III. Cecily Neville was known as "the Rose of Raby", because she was born at Raby Castle in Durham , and "Proud Cis", because of her pride and a temper that went with it, although she was also known for her piety .

May 3, 2017 · On May 3, 2017 By RSB In The House of York. One of my favorite figures from the Wars of the Roses is Cecily Neville, Duchess of York who came very close to becoming England’s queen through her husband and ended up mother to two, Edward IV and Richard III.
As Laynesmith argues in her book's conclusion, Cecily, duchess of York's “power and significance” (184) in English medieval history surpasses that of many queens consort of the age, though she was never crowned as such.
Duchess of York is the principal courtesy title held by the wife of the Duke of York. Three of the eleven Dukes of York either did not marry or had already assumed the throne prior to marriage, while two of the Dukes married twice; therefore, there have been only ten Duchesses of York.
