Frederick J. Gaenslen School opened its doors in 1939 with a mission to educate children who survived polio, a deadly and contagious disease that stalked families across the globe and right here in Milwaukee in the first half of the twentieth century.

Milwaukee German Immersion School (MGIS) provides English-speaking pupils with the opportunity to learn German in a school where German is the primary language of instruction. Children receive reading instruction in German beginning in K4.
Milwaukee Public Schools has long been known for its award-winning language immersion specialty schools, which offer full immersion in French, German, and Spanish and partial immersion in Italian. In a language immersion school, students learn core subjects in the target language.
