  1. Nov 22, 2017 · Map of the Garden Route Itinerary. Click here for the Google Maps version of the route. Day 1 and 2: Hermanus/Gansbaai. Hermanus and Gansbaai are stunning stopovers en route from Cape Town to the Garden Route and their natural beauty is mesmerising.

    • Cape Town. Starting with my favourite city in the world… Cape Town, which I would highly recommend adding this to your Garden Route itinerary. You could easily spend weeks in Cape Town and still not see and do everything, but if you give yourself at least 4 – 5 nights, you will be able to get around a few of the main highlights.
    • The Cape Winelands. I LOVE the Cape Winelands, so if you enjoy wine, I would suggest spending a day or two exploring Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or both as the towns are very close to each other.
    • Hermanus. Hermanus is a great place for whale watching, especially between the months of June and October when the southern right whales come to calf and play in the waters here.
    • Cape Agulhas. Between Hermanus and Mossel Bay (via a bit of a diversion south), you’ll find Cape Agulhas (L’Agulhus), the most southerly tip of the African continent.
    • Cape Town – Swellendam – Mossel Bay, 386 km/240 mi. If you start driving from Cape Town early morning you’ll be in Mossel Bay before lunchtime which gives you some time to explore the town.
    • Mossel Bay. As we already mentioned above we stayed here for two nights and really liked it but if you’re not planning to do any activities here one night may be enough.
    • Mossel Bay – (Oudtshoorn) – George – Wilderness – Sedgefield, 80 km/50 mi (180 km/111 mi) Cango Caves and Ostrich Farm, Oudtshoorn. It’s up to you to keep driving along the coast past George to Wilderness or take a detour and go to Oudtshoorn, about 160 km return.
    • Sedgefield – Knysna, 25 km/15,5 mi. Enjoyable drive along the coast with some beautiful views. We were worried a bit about Knysna after the big fire of 2017, on the way driving we did see patches of burned forest.
  2. Aug 6, 2024 · Garden Route, South Africa Map. The Garden Route officially starts in Mossel Bay in the west and ends at Storms River in the east. Knsyna sits smack in the middle, making it a great base for your excursions. However, the unofficial route extends from the Winelands of Cape Town, up north to the Karoo, and even all the way to Gqeberha (formerly ...

    • Mossely Bay & the sea. Most people use Mossel Bay as a leg-stretching stop en route from Cape Town to the heart of the Garden Route, but if you can spare an afternoon, there’s really quite a lot to keep you occupied.
    • Wilderness & Garden Route National Park. Head back to the main highway and take the short but scenic drive to Wilderness. Pull over at Dolphin Point for a peek at the decommissioned train line below and for photos of the wild and blissfully undeveloped Wilderness Beach.
    • Knysna & the lagoon. The road dips and climbs slightly for 23km until you pass through Sedgefield, largely known for its busy Saturday morning market.
    • Plettenberg Bay & Robberg Nature Reserve. Once you crest the hill that houses the townships, you find the road soon flanked by dense forest. It’s a pleasant and pretty 35km drive to Plettenberg Bay, with plenty of curiosities along the way.
  3. Nov 28, 2023 · Cape Town and the Garden Route is a classic pairing for travelers headed to South Africa. It's best to spend 12 to 15 days in-country—this allows for plenty of time to enjoy the top sights and activities at each stop.
