Oct 7, 2022 · When sanding plywood, it’s really important not to oversand. If you sand for too long or with too coarse of a grit, you can sand all the way through the top layer of veneer…aka the pretty wood grain pattern. If you oversand, unfortunately, you can’t add the wood grain back.
- Not enough sanding. In my very earliest days of woodworking, I used to think that sanding through all the different grits of sandpaper was for anal-retentive chumps.
- Using incompatible products. Oily tropical hardwoods can cause a lot of problems; essentially, the finish seems to stay wet and tacky indefinitely. This is due to the antioxidants present in the heartwood, which prevent the finish from properly curing (through oxidation).
- Not enough coats of finish. Most people are looking for the fastest, easiest wood finish. This is a perfectly understandable impulse, but if you’ve put all that work into a project, it makes sense to finish strong.
- No rubbing out. Most of the time, when advocates of only using a single thin finish film complain that thicker finishes look “plasticky,” it is usually because the finish was slopped on in several thick, drippy, gobbledy-gook coats (polyurethane is chief in this trespass).
- Clean your Hands and the Wall Surface. To get started, make sure to wash your hands to rid them of any grease and oils. Even the slightest amount of grease can leave smudges on your poster which will be unsightly when it is up.
- Flatten the Poster. If your poster is not framed, you might need to flatten it to make it easier to hang it up. It will also sit better. Posters that are packaged in a tube will usually roll up, and this could make it curl away from the wall if the adhesive you use is not firm enough to hold it.
