  1. Oct 17, 2024 · This hack achieves what many IKEA enthusiasts have long desired: a height extension for the PAX system. While IKEA hasn’t yet blessed us with an official BILLY-style height extension for PAX wardrobes (a dream many of us still hold onto), John’s solution fills this gap. He picked the METOD 100×40 cm wall frames (laid sideways) for this.

    • Plan the built in or closet location, dimensions, and style. When it comes to doing an IKEA PAX hack, for either an IKEA PAX closet hack or an IKEA PAX built in hack, the first step is to make a plan about the exact location you want to create the built in or closet, as well as the final design style and dimensions.
    • Prep the wall and remove the existing baseboard. To make any cabinet built in, the existing baseboard needs to be removed from the wall, so you can attach the cabinet to the wall.
    • Assemble the IKEA PAX cabinet. Begin by assembling the IKEA PAX cabinet per the IKEA instructions. I was lucky that mine were already assembled since we found them thrifting!
    • Build a base support (if needed) and attach it to the wall. As described in step #1, we built a base support for the IKEA cabinets to sit on to create the built in look with trim.

A little known secret is that IKEA sells packs of plugs designed to hide the many, many holes in the Pax system that are used for shelving, etc. They sell packs of 100 plugs for $1, and while they are more difficult to install than expected they are totally worth the effort.

  3. The secret to this IKEA Pax hack lies in the cladding of the doors. The actual Pax wardrobes aren’t actually extended, just the doors are! The doors are covered in cladding which not only allows you to extend them but enables you to combine them with other IKEA cupboards (one part of our wardrobe is a Billy cupboard) and create a completely seamless and custom built-in piece of furniture.
