The West Somerset Railway could not function without the 1000 plus volunteers who freely give their time and talent to the railway. Modern regulations mean that volunteers working on the railway must now be registered directly with the WSR PLC who hold responsibility for the safety of the operational railway.
There are hundreds of active volunteers helping to run the West Somerset Railway. Of course, new volunteers are needed and welcomed. Lots of different skills are required... The West Somerset Railway encourages people with or without railway skills or background to join in the volunteer work and activities of the Railway.
Our Trustees are volunteers, as are most of those who support the WSRA and the railway. We have a very small team of paid staff, but could not operate without our volunteers. 1) All potential volunteers are required to be approved by the PLC before they can work West Somerset Railway for the Trust. The Trust welcomes new volunteers and should always adopt a positive recruitment strategy. No previous experience is needed, and appropriate training and supervision should be given.
