The public now has “remote access” to certain public documents filed in Missouri court cases via Case.net. This applies only to public documents filed on or after July 1, 2023.
Once a circuit court offers remote public access, citizens will be allowed to view public court records dating back to July 1. Any public court records filed before July 1 will not be accessible remotely.
Beginning July 1, the public will have remote access to documents on Case.net filed on or after that date if they could be viewed on a court’s public access terminal. 1 This expanded public access makes the filer’s redaction obligation for those documents more critical than ever. 2
“The changes coming to Case.net starting July 1 will allow Missourians to access public court documents when and where it’s most convenient for them.” But remote public access also heightens the need to protect confidential information in court documents.
The expanded access to public case documents will be prospective only – available only for documents filed on or after July 1, 2023. Documents filed before that date will continue to be available at the public access terminals in every state courthouse.
Feb 9, 2024 · Following the plan, Missouri state courts will place new electronically filed pleadings automatically onto a public website when they cross the virtual counter into the clerk’s office. The deal will return public access that was common throughout America in the days of paper.
