Jul 21, 2016 · Lufthansa has changed this about early 2015, and any seat assignment now costs money. If you are not willing to pay, you can wait until you are at the desk in the airport, and then they will assign you a seat for free - that could be an exit row seat, or a dreaded middle seat between two overweight smelly guys; but mostly the latter.

If you are allowed advanced seat assignment, you'll get it even if you need to call (with the agent, you can use eticket number to locate your reservation). I've bought both types of LH flight on UA.
While UA does allow for free seat assignments on the routes it actually flies, that does not carry over to any of the partner airlines (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian to name a few). We have encountered this with codeshares, particularly with LH.
