Cal Turner. Hurley Calister "Cal" Turner (May 28, 1915 – November 20, 2000) was an American businessman. He was the co-founder of Dollar General alongside his father.
The company began in 1939 in Scottsville, Kentucky, as a family-owned business called J.L. Turner and Son, owned by James Luther Turner and Cal Turner. In 1955, the name changed to Dollar General Corporation, and in 1968 the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange.
Inheriting his father's growing regional chain, Cal Turner led Dollar General's expansion beyond its Kentucky and Tennessee stronghold by taking the company public in 1968 and opening hundreds of stores across multiple new states.
