Jul 6, 2018 · How to DIY a built-in entertainment center with shiplap 1. Assemble the kitchen cabinets. The first step was to build IKEA cabinetry per IKEA instructions. Then, I put them in place and added trim to sides and tops to give it that built-in look. For the sides, I bought some primed 1x4s and cut them to fit. Attached them with L-brackets.
A great IKEA hack for an entertainment center is to create a built-in look by using IKEA kitchen cabinets. Assemble the cabinets according to IKEA instructions and then put them in place. Add trim to the sides and tops to achieve a seamless built-in appearance.
- Create the base & ATTACH WALL CABINETS. The base was constructed using 1″x6″ boards because I wanted the cabinet bases to be raised 6 inches off the ground.
- Attach tops to the wall cabinets. Next, you’ll want to create 3 separate tops to attach on top of your cabinets to serve as the base for your built-in bookshelves (the top structures).
- construct 3 upper sections & secure cabinets to wall. Honestly, this is the part that seemed so darn scary and overwhelming to me. I’ve never attempted to create built-in shelves before, but our new Kreg Jig made this ridiculously easy.
- trim it out. My husband would tell you that adding the trim to this massive unit was easily the longest part of the project. Baseboards were attached to the bottom of the platform base.
- Make a Good Plan.
- Hiding the Electronics Cords. Ed wishes that he did this step BEFORE we installed the brick panels. With some NSFW language, he retrofitted a groove in the drywall behind the panels.
- Turning Kitchen Cabinets into a Custom Entertainment Center. We decided to build our own doors after finding similar doors in stock were over $70 each.
- Hiding Electronics with Metal Screen Doors.
