Continuing the gruesome gore-porn that Eli Roth began 12 years ago in the original Cabin Fever, Cabin Fever: Patient Zero – the third film in the franchise – offers nothing more than one clever kill and some good make-up effects. If you come to Patient Zero looking for any sort of clever twist on the genre or anything resembling a unique experience, you’ll be sorely disappointed. If, however, you’re just looking for trite dialogue such as “We’re talking about an outbreak on a massive scale!” with escalating gross-out moments, then this movie might have something to offer.

Porter (Sean Astin) is a man being held against his will by Dr. Edwards (Currie Graham) in a remote facility where a flesh eating virus is being studied. We never learn how he wound up there or what his story is, probably because neither the screenwriter nor the director care all that much.

Meanwhile, Marcus (Mitch Ryan) is taken on a boat cruise of doom to the same remote island, under the pretense that his brother Josh (Brando Eaton), his brother’s girlfriend Penny (Jillian Murray) and buddy Dobbs (Ryan Donowho) are going to give him an unforgettable bachelor party before he gets married the next day. When Penny and Josh get exposed to the virus, things go awry and the bloodlust begins.

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero has fleeting moments of creativity stifled by clichés, stereotypical characters, and uninspired storytelling. Even the mighty Sean Astin can’t do much to save the movie, despite being the best thing about it.
