Bukavu has more than 1 million residents and is one of the most populated cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Established in 1900 as a military post in Belgian King Leopold’s Congo Free State, Bukavu’s area has not expanded significantly since independence in 1960, but its population has greatly increased since the 1990s.
