Throughout this paper, any criminal behaviour utilising the Internet will be termed ‘cybercrime’ unless referring to specific research using other terminology.

This study investigates social media fraud facilitated by botnets to understand the onset and maturation of this new online offending behaviour and concludes that the rise in cybercrime is a result of the behaviours of all actors in the system, not just those who offend.

These include (1) the history/evolution of the cybercrime concept, (2) the atypical nature of cybercrime, (3) the breadth of cyberspace, (4) the global nature of cybercrime, (5) the absence of empirical research on the topic, and (6) the multidisciplinary nature of cybercrime.
